Priory Panthers Cricket Club Sunday XI v Whirlpool on Sun 01 Jun 2008 at
Priory Panthers Cricket Club Won 115 runs
Match report
Having not played last week, it seemed as though everyone was in a jollier mood that usual as we warmed up for our game against Whirlpool. Maybe it was because the weather was pleasant, or is it that that our team spirit had never been so good? The latter me thinks. Whatever, the news that our opponents chased down 222 with only nine men for a victory last week didn’t dampen our ardour as we won the toss and decided to bat first. Again they could only muster 9 players so Sital kindly offered to field for a while, instantly becoming their star player with some annoyingly good stops in the covers. Bev and Ade started cautiously and negotiated the first few overs with only a couple of minor scares, scoring the odd boundary whilst at the same time trying to see-off the openers. All went well until Bev skied one which was caught at the second attempt and then Ade was uncharacteristically bowled playing a defensive stroke to a slower delivery. Rob Oz and the skipper continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over by stealing the odd single but soon Rob was to perish from a dubious LBW decision by his compatriot umpire. He was later heard muttering profanities into his Fosters but I believe they kissed and made up in the bar later on. Things got worse as Dan was dismissed the very next ball but who strode in next, head held high bristling with confidence to face the hat-trick ball? Now listen to me any Old Leagonians who may be out there. I know he has doughnuts for tea every night and for a reason I have yet to find out you have put a voodoo curse on him, but Noel would always be my “first on the team sheet” player for every game. There, that’s sorted that one out uncle Noel. Anyway, he skilfully negotiated the hat-trick ball and never looked in any trouble as the ship was steadied and we reached 61 at the drinks break. Not a fantastic score off 20 overs but with the second string bowlers in action and the skipper in good form, a total of 160 was a possibility. Noel, Gerhardt and Ed all played their part in the remaining overs by accelerating the scoring rate, so much so that we reached 109 by 30 overs and an amazing 219 at the end of the innings.
A great partnership of 90 was enjoyed by Ed and the skipper who finished on 46 n.o and 96 respectively which was the backbone of the innings and gave us a total we were confident of defending.
Due to the opening spells from Gerhardt and Sital it was quickly apparent that only a downpour would prevent us from chalking up another win. Their scoring rate never improved when Noel and Ade picked up the ball either. Ah yes, for those Old Leagonians still with us I need to inform you of a devastating spell of bowling from….you guessed it Mr. Noel Medici. Three unplayable deliveries all but wiped out their middle order and at this point he was hastily withdrawn from the attack so as to rest him for the next game. Vicky bowled extremely well with no luck at all but by far, the most impressive aspect of the match was our fielding and catching (8 in all), none better than the one-handed effort from Rob B, (even though he continued chasing the ball before realising it was stuck to his palm). There were also good catches from Bev, Rob Oz and Ed who bagged a brace each. Whirlpool finished on 104 which was 115 shy of our total. As mentioned earlier our team spirit and enthusiasm is at its peak – long may it continue.
