Sunday XI
Captain :
Steve Martin
Former experienced skipper of the Alliance, he now leads us into the field - which sounds like a political coup. He leads by example and even brings the team's cheerleaders along every sunday rain or shine. The perfect captain as he is competitive but nothing seems to upset him in the field even when three people offer him different advice at the same time.
Players
Charlotte .
Luckily for us, Charlotte has turned up when we've been short and always puts in a good performance. No doubt we will see her again this season!!
Gorden .
New arrival for 2008 (and hoping he stays awhile), Gorden is another of Ed's cricketing friends. First impression is that he looks uncannily like a left-handed Ade W.....and looks quite capable of scoring as many runs!!
A Abid
Free transfer from Old Lambethan's during the close season, Abid has no problem in sharing his wisdom in all aspects of the game. Useful off spinner but yet to find a chance build a decent innings.
Bhush Amin
Whether on the golf course or at the wicket, the resultant cry of “fore” is quite often heard as Bhush attempts to hit the ball 360 yards!! Luckily for us our useful all-rounder is concentrating on the cricket this season – that’s if we can get him off the phone for long enough!!!
Leonard Beukes
Tony Brett
Tony “swinger” Brett (that’s my nickname for his bowling style and nothing at all to do with his love life – although something strange does occur whenever he’s had a shave!!!) A much-improved bowler who’s going to take plenty of wickets this season.
Gerhardt Breytenbach
Yet another of Ed's chums, Gerhardt seems to have acquired the same polished cricketing skills as all the others. Both batting and bowling departments are top notch so we're looking forward to some good performances.
Robert Brooks
The backbone of the club, Rob is Mr. Panthers! Great organiser and improving batsman makes us the envy of all clubs up and down Carshalton Road! Seriously though, we would struggle without his tireless contribution and he even had the foresight to provide us with our best bowler Tom!!!
Tom Brooks
As our main strike bowler, Tom’s started the season in top form, and long may it continue! His batting seems to have improved too and he could easily bribe his way to the top end of the order! Together with Brad, Tom is the youngest member of the squad, which brings the average age down by about 5 minutes to well under 50!!!
Steve Cockerton
Top ‘keeper Steve is one of the ex Alliance renegades who now plies his trade with the Panthers Sunday X1. A good bat, but has no regard for the well-being of his partner as he sprints whippet-like for an easy three, usually overtaking him by the end of the second!! Oppo batsmen are always impressed by his friendly comments and advice!!
Ed Coetzer
Our newest overseas recruit, Ed has slotted straight into place as our opening bowler with his useful away swingers. Has bags of enthusiasm in the field and looks to have some potential in the batting department too. A good find for the club...as are his multitude of cricket playing friends!!
Adrian Davies
His email address is Adriantall and we can see why. A talented musician who doesnt seem scared to get his fingers hurt playing cricket (not like some.... ) . He a good Wednesday night allrounder who has had some good bowling performances in the past. He recently twisted his ankle whilst drunk and playing football in the garden with his son so adding to my ever increasing list of reasons people cant play this week.
Grove Du Toit
Another of Ed's mates who was obviously taught cricket before English, Grove looks to be a good prospect especially if he gets to play more regularly.
Vicky Howard
Vicky has regularly bailed us out when short of players and has never let us down. On ability, Vicky would easily make the Wednesday team if she decided to join full time.
Rob Inglis
Our latest recruite of 2007, Rob has all the atributes of your typical Aussie cricketer - enthusiasic, plenty to say and the first one at the bar...a good aquisition for the club.
Raj kupendrarajah
Affable Raj is a handy cricketer to have in your side – can be relied on whether batting or bowling and also has a safe pair of hands. Currently my best friend in the club as I would like to buy his car for a very cheap price!!!
Bevan Lester
Bevan, our Antipodal all-rounder must have partaken in some form of gene therapy, as he seems to lack most of the Aussie traits I’ve ever encountered on a cricket field – no sledging, only modest alcohol consumption, charm – I’d better stop there before I get a marriage proposal!! At the wicket he can win a game single-handed with some devastating hitting.
Ollie Lester
A chip off the old Lester block, Ollie is well on his way to overtake his dad Bev in the batting and bowling departments. Looks comfortable playing against older opposition on the few occasions when needed.
Ally Marsh
Malcolm McLaughlen
The return of the deadeye. Another member of the grey hair brigade and a founder member of the club. He spends his sundays clay pigeon shooting and promises to bring his gun on Wednesdays when Steve Webbe is batting. Welcome home mate.
Noel Medici
Hard-working Noel would always be the first name on my team sheet. Whether with bat or ball he’ll always give you 100% and usually makes a telling contribution. Now famous as a Mr. Blobby look-alike on a competitors web site, Noel states that "those doughnuts were for my son"
Jim Patel
Sital Patel
Sital is our first major signing from the opposition. Well actually our only one and it was free transfer to avoid tax. He fitted socially from the word go and is never seen to leave the bar first . Seems to bring his work with him as is always slagging off his boss but this is understandable. A great new signing as is a steady bowler and a good bat who has not had his day yet but will soon.
Barry Payne
Contrary to popular belief, there is absolutely no truth in the rumour that Barry is Rob’s long lost brother,
Barry has made the opening slot all his own this season - probably due to the fact that once sat down, he struggles to stand up again!!
Give up football PLEASE!!!
Dan Scott
Newcomer Dan has resumed his cricket career after a layoff of six years, but you’d hard pushed to find any cobwebs. Looks to be solid in both the batting and bowling department, but the jury’s still out on the catching
skills!! A very useful looking acquisition to the Panthers line-up.
Geoff Sinnerton
One of the Panthers founder members, club treasurer and wicket keeper Geoff plays an important role in club. A useful bat, Geoff also holds the record of running out three batsmen in three balls, surly a unique hat-trick!
Marius van Zyl
Adrian Ward
A gifted all-rounder, Ade must now brush up on his coaching techniques, as new arrival Aiden is hoping to make his Panthers debut in season 2020! Sensibly, Carol brought her young son along to witness his dad in action, and to savour the awe-inspiring skills of the Panthers Sunday X1.
My bet for top batting average every season, provided he doesn’t encounter too many girl bowlers!!!
Steve Webbe
Put 5 men at deep mid wicket goes the cry. He always has a smile on his face and a bright shirt on his back. We havent seen the best of his bowling yet and wish that we had it for Sunday games .
He has a dirty joke for every occassion.
Graham Wharton
Luckily we have three good ‘keepers on the books and my next-door neighbour Graham is one of them. First noticed his cricketing prowess over the fence as he donned the gloves and coached his young daughter to return the ball right over the bails – or no dinner!!!
Peter Wraith
Quiet and unassuming, Pete has that annoying talent of being able to pick up a bat after 4 months off, and middle the next 45 balls - most going to the boundary. Probably the best batsman in the club to watch and also for consistency. Has had more 25 not outs at evening matches than everyone else put together.
